CVs That Stand Out in UK Manufacturing & Chemical Engineering (2025 Edition)
October 29As recruiters, we read lots of CVs every month and we can tell you that the ones that truly stand out aren’t necessarily the longest or most polished. They’re the ones that tell a story.
In 2025, the manufacturing and chemical sectors are evolving rapidly. Automation, sustainability and digital transformation are changing the skills employers value. So, how can senior professionals make their CVs reflect who they are and what they bring to the table?
1. Start with impact
Your opening lines should summarise your unique contribution not just your job title. What have you achieved? Think about tangible results: improved production efficiency, reduced waste, led a safety initiative, delivered new product lines. Numbers and outcomes speak volumes.
2. Show leadership, not hierarchy
Whether you’re leading a team of two or a site of two hundred, leadership shows in how you communicate, motivate and problem-solve. Use examples that demonstrate influence, collaboration and decision-making.
3. Balance technical with human
Manufacturing and chemical businesses hire people, not machines. Yes, your technical expertise matters but your ability to adapt, lead and connect across departments can be the deciding factor. Highlight soft skills like communication, mentoring and resilience.
4. Keep it relevant
Tailor your CV for each opportunity. Reference industry standards, technologies or regulations that align with the company’s focus. A little tailoring shows genuine interest and it’s obvious when it’s missing.
5. Don’t overcomplicate it
We often see talented people undersell themselves by using outdated templates or overloading their CV with jargon. Clarity is key. A clean, concise layout helps your strengths shine.
At Handley James, we don’t just match skills to roles we match people to cultures. When we review a CV, we’re looking for evidence that someone understands how they make an impact and where they want to grow next.
So, take some time this month to review your CV with fresh eyes. Is it still telling the story of where you’ve been or is it helping shape where you want to go next?
